Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role - Kate Winslet for The Reader

Our Pick - Happy to see Kate Winslet win one (Personally I think she got robbed in 2005 when she didn't win for Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind) although we were not that impressed with her performace in The Reader.  We have gone with Anne Hathaway for her performance in Rachel Getting Married.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight

Our Pick - As good as Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are in just about everything, Heath Ledger is clearly the winner here.  He took an iconic character, made it his own and created a performance that we couldn't look away from.  He did an amazing job

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role - Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Our Pick - Penelope Cruz was great as the firey psychotic artist and we at the Jolt would have made the same pick.  Although we feel that Marisa Tomei was excellent in The Wrestler and we wouldn't have been upset if she had won instead.

Is Hampshire About to Invest in Israel Bonds?!!!

posted feb 22 2009, 7:36am by

News that divestment advocates at Hampshire have been forced to admit the college DID NOT divest in Israel (but that they will still continue to believe that it did with all their hearts), turned my post-vacation thoughts to parody:

In a further complication to the divestment controversy that continues to roil Hampshire College, today a new student group: Students of Hampshire United to Save Humanity (SHUSH) has issued its own press release arguing that the college’s recent decision to sell shares in a State Street investment fund was meant to free up cash in order to invest a majority of the college’s endowment in Israel Bonds.

“According to our interpretation of recent events,” says Mehmet Bernardo, spokesman for SHUSH, “the original board vote to sell $4 million in school investments was taken to ‘get those SJP jerks off our back for a few weeks so we can get some work done.’ Once the dust clears, the school plans to take that money and invest it entirely in Caterpillar Tractor and Israel Bonds in order to show the SJP protestors just ‘who’s the man.’”

The school administration neither confirms nor denies the truth or falsehood of this or any other claim related to the current controversy or any matter before the college.

“Case closed, then,” says Bernardo, as he finished posting the SHUSH press release on another 800 blogs. “What further proof do you need that the administration is in 100% agreement with us?”

Representatives from Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) were apoplectic at the recent turn in events. “Those SHUSHers are clearly taking advantage of the ambiguity of administration statements to stuff their own words into the mouth of the college for their own narrow political gain,” claimed SJP spokesperson Morty Frampton. “Don’t they know that’s our job! Besides, we have a petition signed by 21 sociology professors who agree with our interpretation of events. So there! (By the way, did I mention I’m Jewish?)”

SHUSH’s Bernardo was amused by the SJP outcry. “They’re just pissed because our press release got more Diggs than they did. And as for their 21 sociology professors, we have a petition signed by 30 members of the math department! Like the SJP sociologists, the people who signed our petition haven’t the slightest idea how the schools’ investment/divestment decisions get made. But we’ve got 30 of them! And they teach math!"

Coraline

posted feb 14 2009, 3:11pm by

For those that know me, it does take a lot to get me off my bum and into a movie theatre. Being a poor college student and all does that to you. But, every so often the trek does happen, and I did do just this. I'm glad I did. Today's subject: Coraline.

Being a huge fan of the book (Seriously, go read it), and hearing that a (single, not Tim Burton) director of The Nightmare Before Christmas was directing it, I decided to go see it. I did thoroughly enjoy it, I will start off with. Would I recommend making a solid effort to get to it in time to beat whatever rush there may be? No, but I wouldn't recommend avoiding it either.

Granted, Coraline's target demographic is aimed at a younger crowd. The downside to this strategy is that the motif of Coraline is darker, which may offput young Jimmy and Jenny. However, the movie does contain beautiful animation very carefully constructed to make you smile, laugh and, in a few scenes, go "0_o". The story is easy to follow for those of you without attention spans, and the time seems to go by quickly. The characters are loveable, and I personally hope this gets a lot of audience generated for the book (put down the Harry Potter, please).

If you happen to be at the mall with a couple hours to kill or are spending some time with the family, this is a thoroughly enjoyable way to do so.

Pros: Beautiful animation, a visual masterpiece. Effort was clearly put into this. Well thought-out and planned. Will make you smile, laugh, and enjoy a casual day at the movie theatres not seen since The Dark Knight decided to be epic (see this, too). Faithful to the tone and spirit of the book.

Cons: You know how it's going to end part way through the movie (although this doesn't really ruin anything for you, ultimately). Slow-starting. Has a tendency to make the audience say "What did I just see?", though this shouldn't always be taken as a negative thing.

All in all, see it with friends, family, or when you have hours to kill for some reason. Or see it alone if you're into beautifully done movies that will make you happy and fuzzy somewhere on the inside. Just don't pass it up just because it's rated PG. We won't judge you.

Hampshire, you really delivered last night.

posted nov 5 2008, 12:08pm by

There was no place I'd rather have been last night than Hampshire College. That was a beautiful, beautiful thing. If only I could save those minutes in front of the library lawn, permanently, in my brain, and in my heart. However, your recordings will have to make do! Please, please post your documentation and share the link--on hampsters.livejournal.com, or here, or anywhere else. But share it!

My friend who worked about 60 hours/week for the Obama campaign (not even paid!) called me last night from Chicago and described it as "the most amazing night of her life."

I am excited that he won, but reluctant to announce us saved just yet. We'll see where this goes.

Anyway, I just woke up, have to go obtain some caffeine and get my day together but...

Oh my God, you guys. We did it!

On Having Standards and Standing By Them

posted oct 20 2008, 3:11pm by

(COPIED AND PASTED, as usual, from http://yawanur.livejournal.com)

Seriously, you guys.

Things I would absolutely love to see you do more (or less)--both as jolt posters, and Hampshire College students:

1) Don't let the MAN-- whether that be the institution or the pagan, genderqueer, person of color next door-- tell you what you should think. Decide for yourself.

2) Stick up for your friends. They're your friends.

3) Learn what tolerance means. IE, have more respect for people whose politics are to the right of yours.

4) Engage. If I overhear/read one more person saying "Well obviously you are ignorant, end conversation," I may just give up on you altogether.

5) Get used to the idea that just because you understand something to be part of your identity does not mean it can't be understood as a concept as well. Atheists can talk about religion, straight people can talk about homosexuality, etc. Various opinions can be legitimately held and unless you're insecure, you can accept those opinions as things you disagree with, as opposed to personal attacks.

6) Be passionate. As in, not boring.

7) Post more on the Hampshire form, plz. Consider submitting pictures of your costume to the Jolt costume contest at this link:

http://hampshire.thejolt.com/pictures/submit_picture.html?album_id=1454
http://i.ixnp.com/images/v3.52.0.2/theme/silver/palette.gif

8) GET PUMPED FOR HAMPSHIRE HALLOWEEN. It's going to be incredible! Things I, personally, am looking forward to: Gin and Tonics (first show of the year!), fireworks, Circus Fire Show, Ukulele Loki/Primate Fiasco/Circus show, Soul Live, Exit Ghost, and of course, midnight breakfast. There will be lots of other awesome stuff, and a complete schedule will be posted soon. This year's event will take place on Halloween itself--Friday, October 31st.

I was going to do 10 things, and do like a 10 commandments analogy, but now that I think about it, that sounds pretty lame.  In my next post, I would like to present a list of links to student webpages, webcomics, public blogs, etc. If you have stuff on the net you want to show off, send it to me at jtp05. <3

So my recent internet procrastination method has been googling/ebaying/otherwise finding haunted ("haunted?") objects. This came from discovering Robert The Doll (http://www.robertthedoll.org/http://i.ixnp.com/images/v3.52.0.2/theme/silver/palette.gif via thequestionclub (http://thequestionclub.livejournal.com). Then I found out that there are tons of "occult objects" out there. Who knew? Can you even imagine having a house full of creepy haunted shit?  Do you believe in ghosts? In high school, I worked for IT, and one of the guys there was an experienced ghost hunter. How cool is that?

I am excited that Hampshire Halloween is actually on Halloween this year. Who knows what will happen!

Love,

Get ready for Hampshire Halloween!

What's up fellow five college Hampshire Halloween loving division creators!  Hi Daily Jolt, I am an alumni from the class of 2005 and in my time at hampshire I made a music video for the Hampshire Halloween celebration as a Div 2 project.  Halloween is one of the most prestigious and rambunctious parties the college is responsible for, let's have a great time this year! To get excited for the festival I've posted a link to a pre-party video, share with all friends and folks who are trying to attend!

JTP, reporting in. I know, I know, how typical. But just remember it's because I love you, not because I love me.

So, first thing's first: Div Fucking III

Here I am, a new div II passee (as of this morning, zomg), looking at the wednesday deadline for passing into Div III and thinking: What about the people who don't have the amazing CS professor to save you when the SS professor fucks you over? (I feel like SS has made a profession out of fucking people over).

What do I mean by that, you ask? I mean absolutely this: Finding a committee is a political process, the most qualified faculty members probably won't work with you if you don't know them, and if you're terribly unlucky, they might turn out ot be rude, disrespectful individuals who would be perfectly happy to wait until the day before the Div III deadline to tell you they won't chair your committee ( i navigated around that awful fate, but it was damn close). Div II, students, two fuckin' huge pieces of advice:
1) Do something related to your Div II for your Div III, because then you'll know people.
2) Make people like you NOW. Drop the words "Div III" around with a few of your favorites NOW.

Trust me, you do not want to be on the phone with Anne Downes less than a week before deadline.  Nothing makes you feel like your screwed more than a conversation on the phone with Anne Downes (actually, that's not true, people who have met with her in person tend to burst into tears of despair,  which is sight worse than a phone conversation).  I mean for shits sake, her last name is Downes.  No, no, in all seriousness, she helped me out tremendously. If you're a Div III student who has no committee, or only half a committee, call her up ASAP, so you DON'T ACTUALLY get screwed.

And speaking of getting screwed, my div III is on love and intimacy between heterosexual couples in U.S. cities (ok, and some non rural suburbs?) over the last century. Some of you are surely thinking: Will this in any way involve JTP getting screwed in the happy sense? The answer is no. I am a rock. I am an island.

So. God, what else? I'm gonna go to the ABC tonight and do that thing where I ask "what's that drink that's melon flavored?" Why? Because before I am tipsy, I can't ask for a drink called "nice melons" without blushing. Which is retarded (OH NO SHE SAID "RETARDED" IN  REFERENCE TO SOMETHING THAT WASN'T A MEN

TAL DISORDER!) because I have no trouble talking about, say, masturbating. But no worries, jolters, your stomachs are safe today.

Before I blow this pop stand (my dad always says that, love it), let me just tell you that yesterday morning, I officially became a jolt god, and you can direct all complaints about the jolt, as well as general hate and personal insults, at me any time you like. jtp05@hampshire
orrrrr "lovetherunaway" on AIM. Sounds hot.
